Problem

There are gaps in research engagement of underrepresented racial and ethnic groups.

The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) is dedicated to fostering meaningful engagement in advancing patient-centered comparative clinical effectiveness research (CER). To ensure health research is inclusive and truly reflective of diverse patient perspectives, PCORI is committed to addressing the significant gap in engaging underrepresented racial and ethnic groups in health research partnerships. By generating actionable insights to enhance the quality and inclusiveness of patient-centered outcomes research, more equitable health outcomes can be achieved.

Solution

NORC's mixed-methods study design combines qualitative and quantitative research, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the diverse experiences and contexts of research partners from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups.

Through a literature scan, key informant interviews, surveys, and focus groups, NORC aims to identify factors and strategies that effectively support the involvement of diverse groups as research partners. Our approach highlights NORC's strengths in inclusive and equitable research. By engaging a multi-disciplinary Technical Expert Panel (TEP), NORC is developing actionable strategies and tools to foster inclusive research environments.

Result

The findings will illuminate specific barriers and facilitators affecting the participation of underrepresented racial and ethnic groups in research partnerships.

This project aims to identify gaps in the tools and resources needed to support diverse research collaborations. By providing actionable insights and practical tools, the project will equip PCORI with the necessary information to develop initiatives that address systemic inequities and foster inclusive research environments.
